About

Welcome to the Wood Buffalo Cycling Club!

Based in Fort McMurray Alberta, the Wood Buffalo Cycling Club is the cities only cycling club. It was created in the fall of 2012 to bring together all facets of cycling to have a larger voice in developing the sport in Fort McMurray. Our members have a passion for all things related to cycling including cyclo-cross, road racing, ultra rides, mountain biking, urban cycling and triathlons from all skill levels of riders. If you’d like to know more about the club, or would like to join us for a ride, check out our Membership section for more info.

Road Cyclists have the opportunity to participate each Wednesday in a variety of races for all levels of riders. These include Time Trials, Hillclimbs, Mass-Start races, Australian Pursuits, and Road Races for all age categories. Social Club Rides are scheduled each Sunday where all new riders and club members of all skill levels are welcome from April through September. Open social rides are enjoyed by all ages and allow cyclists to share their cycling experiences with others.

Mountain Bike Cyclists have the opportunity to participate each Friday in a variety of races for all levels of riders. These include cross country and downhill/ freeride. There are many mountain bike trails throughout the Fort McMurray area for all riding styles and levels of experience. Wood Buffalo Cycling Club is committed to working with the Municipality of Wood Buffalo and the provincial government to develop a mountain bike parks in Fort McMurray to provide a safe, regulated and well maintained place for bikers of all styles and ages to ride.

The Wood Buffalo Cycling Club also provides the Sprockids training course each summer for kids that are interested in learning mountain biking fundamentals. This is a great opportunity for kids to learn the skills they need to progress their riding in a safe and supportive environment. For more information on the Sprockids program offered by the Wood Buffalo Cycling Club, check out the Sprockids Events page.

We also offer bike maintenance, learn-to-ride, and learn-to-race seminars. These instructional sessions provide information on technical racing, general riding tips, and proper bike fit by our fully-qualified members. During the winter months, the club offers indoor spin sessions.

Riding

Riding is the name of the game for WBCC. We race, we participate in Fondos and chairty rides, we hold training camps in the Okanagan, we go to Europe to ride the Pyrenees and Alps (well, some members do), and we train on local roads.

Racing

Our members can be found racing throughout the Alberta and BC and beyond. In addition to single day events, members organise road trips to attend multi-day stage races abroad.

Race Promotion

As members of Alberta Bicycling Association (the provincial governing body for the sport of cycling in Alberta), we have been very active in race promotion and will start hosting sanctioned races in 2014. Our club events have gained a reputation as being well organized.

Social Events

Club social activities include seasonal parties (e.g. summer BBQ, Christmas party, etc.), year-end award presentations, pub nights, video nights (we know it’s nerdy, but we like cycling videos), and other activities around town.

Discounts

Wood Buffalo Cycling Club has negotiated discounts on merchandise and service from Habitual Sport Fort McMurray’s premier bike retailer.

 PRESIDENT’S VISION FOR WBCC

THIS IS MY VISION OF WHAT THE WOOD BUFFALO CYCLING CLUB WILL OFFER TO THE CYCLISTS OF FORT MCMURRAY. I HAVE HAD THE DREAM, BUT IT WILL ONLY BECOME A REALITY IF THE CYCLISTS OF FORT MCMURRAY BECOME INVOLVED. WE NEED COMMITTED VOLUNTEERS THAT ARE WILLING TO ORGANIZE RACES, EXPERIENCED CYCLIST WILLING TO BECOME CERTIFIED COACHES. WOULD YOU SEND YOUR KID TO PLAY HOCKEY WITH COACHES THAT HAD NEVER PLAYED THE GAME?  I THINK THE SAME IS TRUE FOR CYCLING. I THINK THE CLUB SHOULD HELP PAY THE EXPENSES OF VOLUNTEERS THAT ARE WILL TO TAKE TIME OUT OF THERE LIVES TO TRAVEL TO EDMONTON FOR THIS TRAINING. WE NEED THE COMMITMENT FOR THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY OF FORT MCMURRAY THROUGH SPONSORSHIP FUNDING. AS A NEW SOCIETY IT CAN TAKE UP TO THREE AND A HALF YEARS BEFORE YOU CAN TAP INTO THE CASINO FUNDS FOR YOUTH PROGRAMS. THERE IS A TON OF INFORMATION ABOUT WHAT THE CLUB WILL BECOME, ON OUR WEBSITE ONCE IT IS UP, CURRENTLY BEING DEVELOPED BY ONE OF THE CLUBS VOLUNTEERS. THE MUNICIPALITY IS WILLING TO WORK WITH CLUBS THAT ARE AFFILIATED WITH THE PROVINCIAL BODIES, SO THAT THEY CAN TAP INTO PROVINCIAL FUNDING SOURCES. ULTIMATELY THE CLUB WILL DEVELOP FROM THE DREAM AND ASPIRATION OF ONE INTO THAT OF ITS MEMBERSHIP. THAT IS WHY I STARTED THE WOOD BUFFALO CYCLING CLUB.
