Where to Ride

ROAD RIDING

Fort McMurray is a great area for cycling! Sure, some of the streets can get crazy during rush hour – Franklin Drive, for instance. But when you bike early in the mornings, during mid-day, in the early evening, as well as most any time during the weekend, even Franklin Drive is a wonderful street to ride. So, grab some friends or grab your kids (or your parents and grandparents) and get pedaling!

MOUNTAIN BIKING

The Birchwood Trails are a popular spot for trail riding. The trails are wide and non-technical. If you stay on the top trails, they are generally easy to ride with few hills.  If you want a more challenging ride, dip down into the Birchwood trails and enjoy some rollers, fun corners, and steep climbs and descents.  THE TRAILS ARE SHARED, so please take caution and yeild to walkers, hikers, and runners.

The Bike Park in Thickwood is most popular among mountain bikers looking for singletrack and features.  Below the Gazebo is a small skills park to practice jumps, wall rides, skinnies, etc.  You will also see the Bike Park Trail map located next to the Gazebo.

The main trail head to the Bike Park is accessed from the Ross Hennigar Baseball parking lot.  You will also see a trail map displayed there.  Take caution as some of the trails are closed due to the fire and still need repairs.

For easy riding, you can follow the Ross Hennigar gravel trail all the way from the Gazebo to the top of Real Martin Drive and back. It’s roughly 10km, out and back.

Along the Ross Hennigar trail you will notice several trail heads. Most of those trails are singletrack but some need work as they were severely damaged due to the fire.  Exercise caution.

Little Fisheries is also a popular trail for mountain bikers. Most of the trail is rideable but some sections get very muddy.  We are in the process of trying to fix it up.

MAPS & GUIDES

There are trails all over the city, as well as some great road riding routes. While we do have a map for the bike park, you can locate more routes by using either Strava or TrailForks.  Also, join our facebook group and connect with others who ride on a regular basis.
